NYC Museums with Sketching –
Metropolitan Museum of Art –
Drop-in-Drawing happens one Friday evening each month from 6:30-8:30 PM. Drawing materials and stools provided. See their print or online brochure for dates. Look under MetCreates for Drop-in-Drawing. New sessions starting at the Cloisters. https://www.metmuseum.org/
Frick Museum –
First Fridays: Museum admission and gallery programs will be free from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the first Friday evening of the month (except January and September). Visitors will have access to the permanent collection and special exhibition galleries and enjoy talks and lectures by museum educators and curators, as well as music and dance performances and open sketching in the Garden Court (complimentary materials provided by the Frick).
Wednesday Atelier – Draw in the company of the Old Masters on selected Wednesday evenings. Artists of all skill levels are welcome to sketch in the tranquil, historic galleries of the Frick. Free online registration includes museum admission and after-hours access to selected galleries; (usually 2x @ month) Museum admission is free, but advance registration is required.
Paper, graphite pencils, erasers, drawing boards, and gallery stools are provided. For those who wish to bring their own art materials, please review the guidelines for sketching in the galleries prior to your visit. https://www.frick.org/programs/drawing_programs
The Morgan Library and Museum –
Sketching in the Gallery: Spend two hours sketching, drawing inspiration from works in the Morgan’s current exhibitions. Professional artists and educators will be available to assist you. Open to artists of all levels. One Saturday a month, 11 AM–1 PM. Free with museum admission.
This program is limited to 12 people on a first come, first served basis. Stools, boards, a selection of pencils, and drawing paper will be provided. While personal sketchbooks are allowed, ink, paint, markers, charcoal, chalk, pastels, folding stools, and easels are not permitted in the galleries. The Whitney has once a month member’s evenings (members can bring one guest,) with art-making as one part of the evening’s program (90% of the time.) https://whitney.org/
