I’ve been sketching and taking photographic images since the age of 7. I went on to attend and graduate from the High School of Art & Design, majoring in Advertising Design. From there, I went on to receive a BFA in Communications Design from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn.
Though my career path took many twists and turns, I always stayed grounded in art, and specifically in photography. About 15 years ago, I bought a pro DSLR camera and jumped back into the ring. I improved on my technical skills by joining photo clubs, taking classes, and going on photo walks. I always felt that my background in fine arts gave me a slight leg up on composition and color theory. When I’m out and about, I’m especially drawn to vibrant colors and/or striking compositions. My current pursuits are night photography and urban exploration (urbex) photography. I desire to tell stories that evoke emotion through my photographs; I want my photographs to start a conversation.
I’m influenced by the melancholy oil paintings of Edward Hopper, and I try to pay homage by incorporating some aspect of his work into my own. I am also intrigued by the elements of Studium and Punctum, from the book, Camera Lucida by Roland Barthe. Studium creates interest in an image and shows the intention of the photographer. These images are likable, but not lovable. Punctum on the other hand, is an image that jumps out at you; they prick or bruise your emotions and are very personal to you, the viewer. Indeed, my camera and I are constantly pursuing Punctum.
I came out of retirement to work part time in the airline industry. This has afforded me the opportunity to travel and see more of the world through my lens. My mirrorless camera and I have traveled as far away as Australia and East Africa. We look forward to visiting many more destinations, so that we may start a new conversation with you all.
