I’ve been drawing and photographing images since I was 7 years old. I graduated from the High School of Art & Design, majoring in Advertising Design. From there, I went on to receive a BFA in Graphic Design from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn.
Though my career path veered off in a completely different direction, I always stayed grounded in art, and specifically in photography. About 15 years ago, I bought a pro DSLR camera and jumped back into the ring. To improve on my technical skills, I joined a photo club, took classes, and went on photo walks. Fortunately, my background in fine arts had already given me a leg up on composition and color theory. I try to tell stories that evoke emotion (Punctum) through my photographs; I want my photographs to start a conversation. That is why every now and then, I’ll throw in a few whimsical images just to stir the pot.
While attending free photography classes at B&H years ago, I learned about Camera Lucida by Roland Barthe. I was intrigued and deeply influenced by the elements of Studium and Punctum. From what I recall, Studium creates interest in an image and shows the intention of the photographer. These images are likable, but not lovable. Punctum on the other hand, is the rare detail that attracts you to an image. Punctum images jump out at you; they prick or bruise your emotions and are very personal to you, the viewer. Indeed, my camera and I have been pursuing Punctum ever since.
I recently came out of retirement from a career in federal law enforcement and began a new career in the airline industry. This has afforded me the chance to see more of the world through my lens. My mirrorless camera and I have traveled to several US destinations, Europe, Australia, and East Africa. Nothing gives me more pleasure than to travel and document the world as I see it.
The highlights of my journey were having two images sold at silent art auctions at Christ Church Riverdale, and then having a copy of one of those images displayed at the Delta Air Lines Employee Service Center and another at Upstream Gallery during its 2024 Annual Juried Photography Show.
